Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
