Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
