Social Media Influencers Driving Parallel Market for Unlicensed Slimming Medication

An underground economy for unapproved slimming medications is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on communication apps, according to new investigations.

Investigational Drug Gaining Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Followers are urged to message these profiles privately for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could assist patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Worries

However, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering substances of unknown origin.

Some professionals said the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the rising price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be promoted or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Some influencers try to sidestep the regulations by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer laws, risking fines, prosecution or prison.

Platform Reaction and Content Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic material and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the service secure and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Digital Marketplace Activities

Investigations also discovered groups with up to nine thousand participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of users, populated with images of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or administering at residence.

After moments of entering one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The seller provided an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within two days. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged laboratory certificate. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Product Information and Pricing

Inside these groups, posts display black plastic parcels with Royal Mail stickers, stating to contain new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically sold at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how long a injector should be used, vendors give conflicting responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it regularly monitored harmful material on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in interest to recent price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using online platforms. But fake treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has previously encountered patients injured by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
